Exhibition titled Between Note and Sound showcases works of the Artes Group and invited guest artists; curators Krystyna Spisak-Madejczyk and Atanaska Tassart.
Artists’ Bios:
Atanaska Tassart
My work is about abstract spacial concepts involving symbols – often the circle. In this piece I open the line of the circle to expand the concept and to experience the great joy of being in the “space between the notes.”

Adam Czekanski
Adam Czekanski was born on November 15th 1973 in Rzeszow, Poland. He attended prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow where in 1998 he earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture obtained under the supervision of professor Józef Sekowski. In 2000, Adam moved to the U. S. and pursued his career as a sculptor and fine artist. He draws inspiration from nature and transforms it into dynamic abstract sculptures and drawings. Adam’s work has been exhibited in number of individual and group shows in the United States and Poland.
Edmund Korzeniewski
Edmund Korzeniewski attended The Parsons School of Design, The New School, Manhattan Graphics Center, The Lower East Side Print Shop, Cooper Union and Queens College. He has had 117 exhibitions including Fifth Bharat Bhavan International Biennial of Print Arts 2001 at Roopankar Museum of Fine Arts, India; Russel Cotes Museum in Bournemouth, England; Delta Gallery in Paris, France; Erlin Gallery in Budapest, Hungary; Majsternia Gallery in Kiev, Ukraine. He received an Award of Excellence in 1996 and 1997 and Award of Merit in 1998 in Art Competition Manhattan Arts International. His art was featured in “Odnalezc w sobie talent” G. A. Kashdan, Warsaw 2011; “Pozegnanie z Arkadia” by E. Wisniewski, Warsaw 2012 and various other publications including Artforum International, Artspeak, Art in America Annual Guide and Manhattan Arts.
Jerzy Kubina
Jerzy Kubina was born in Zamość, Poland. In 1985 he received his MFA from Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow Poland, department of Painting. He exhibition his work in numerous individual exhibitions, including: Fish tank gallery, NY; O.K.Haris, NY; Louis XIV, Paris, FR; and group exhibitions: Museum Convento De Carmen, Guadalajara, Mexico; Chelsea Museum, NY; Everson Museum Syracuse NY.
Ceaseless observation of the constantly changing reality which surrounds me provokes a struggle for a new quality of expression. Genuine creative process is fundamental in my exploration. My artistic work is an attempt to express my reflections on spiritual and existential values.
Stanislaw Mlodozeniec
Stanislaw Mlodozeniec was born in 1953 in Warsaw. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of professors Michal Bylina and Jacek Sienicki. His paintings have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Poland, U.S. and Spain, including: BWA, Sopot, Poland; Kazimierz Dolny, Poland; Gallery of Graphics and Poster, Warsaw, Poland; Zakopane Museum, Poland; Premi Internacional de Dibujo, Barcelona, Spain; 35 years of painting, Zachęta National Gallery, Warsaw, Poland; Jeune Exptression, Grand Palais, Paris, France; East Europeans, El Bahia Gallery, NYC; We Are, National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland; New New Yorkers, Fabryka Trzciny, Warsaw, Poland.
Anna Pawełczak-Szoska
Anna Pawełczak-Szoska studied painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Krakow, Poland. From 1972-1992 she worked as an art teacher. For the last ten years she has been living, working and creating in the U.S. Since 2006 she has participated in collective exhibitions of the Gallery Artes members at Nowy Dziennik in New York.
Her paintings are subtly modeled by using semi transparent colors. Her works characterize lightness and delicate expression close to lyrical abstraction. She simply plays with color and form.
Mira Satryan
Mira Satryan, an outstanding polish painter and illustrator, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland, where she received a Master in Fine Arts degree. Since 1991 she has been working in New York, where she has established herself as a graphics art designer as well as a painter. Her works were presented in numerous galleries in Europe and America and received many awards. Her paintings can be found in many galleries, museums and private collections.
Ryszard Semko
Ryszard Semko was born in 1959 in Szczecin, Poland.
He graduated from the University of Arts in Poznań, Poland with a Master of Fine Arts degree. He has had numerous exhibitions in New York, including: Small Works, 80 Washington Square East Galleries, NYC; Nude on paper, Right Bank Gallery ,Brooklyn; The Self Portraits Show, The New York Law School, NYC; Recent Works , Right Bank Gallery, Brooklyn. In 1994 he received Painting Award from Hillwood Art Museums Grant Program and in 2007 Jurors Award from 80 Washington Square East Galleries.
Krystyna Spisak-Madejczyk
Krystyna Spisak-Madejczyk was born in Krakow, Poland. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the National School of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. Since 1981 she lives and works in the United States. She has exhibited her work in many countries and has received numerous awards. Four large-scale sculptures are on permanent display in Poland, as is a creative design for a New York City subway station. Her artistic endeavors include sculpture, photography and installations. She is a president of Artes Group in New York and member of the New York Society of Women Artists, the National Association of Women Artists, the South Eastern Coalition of Contemporary Artists in Palm Coast, Florida, Ocean Gallery in Flagler Beach, Florida and the Florida Photographers Group.
Marian Christopher Zacharow
Born in Poland. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow where he graduated in 1979. He left Poland for the United States in 1981, to take up permanent residence in New York. He specializes in book and press illustration. His work has been featured in various magazines, including: Time, The New York Time, Business Week, Newsweek. Received many awards for his work including Silver Medal from The Society of Illustrator of New York in 1986. He has been lecturer in painting at The Cooper Union Continuing Education in New York since 1997. Assistant Professor, Adjunct at Pratt Institute in New York since 2007.
Magdalena Zawadzka-Różańska
Magdalena Zawadzka-Różańska was born in Warsaw, Poland and she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. For the past 15 years she has lived and worked in New York after living in Brazil for 20 years. Her paintings are dreamlike interpretations of the reality that surrounds her. Her painting series include: Brazilian Legends, illustrations of Victor Villa-Lobos music and New York Zodiac. Her works are in museums in Brazil, Japan and Italy.

Kasia Kluska-Banks
Kasia Kluska-Banks studied at the Painting and Graphic Department of the Lódź Fine Arts Academy. She has been living and working in New York since 2007. “I find inspiration in the human form, and it’s compositional affect on surrounding space”.
Teresa Małgorzata Żebrowska
Born in Przemyśl, a graduate of the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Rzeszów and the Faculty of Arts of the Pedagogical University of Krakow. In 1985 she graduated with a Master of Arts degree in the Department of Painting under Professor Irena Popiołek-Rodzińska and Professor Stanisław Sobolewski. She was awarded a doctoral degree in arts in 1996, and received her post-doctoral degree in arts in 2002 at the Faculty of Painting of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Chair of Artistic Education at the Pedagogical University and the Chair of Artistic Education at the Ignatianum Jesuit University of Philosophy and Education in Krakow. Winner of many awards and distinctions, her artistic activity involves painting, the graphic arts, collage and photography. She has presented her artistic output at more than 40 solo exhibitions and she has participated in approximately 100 group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Her artworks can be found in private collections in Poland, Europe and the USA.
J.J. Graham
J.J. Graham is an expressionist painter. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He studied art at Jones State College and then painting at the University of Mississippi. In 2008 he co-founded Hollingsworth Gallery as well as the South Eastern Coalition of Contemporary Artists that houses two galleries, studios for 17 working artists and a theater in Palm Coast, Florida. In 2009 he was chosen by the Gargioulo Art Foundation as Artist of the Year for furthering art in his community where he continues to work as an artist, curator and teacher. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States and recently abroad.
Rafal Ekwinski
Rafal Ekwinski was born in 1967 in Warsaw, Poland. In 1994 he graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, department of Painting under the guidance of prof. St. Gierowski. He has had numerous solo exhibition in Poland and the U.S., including American Center of Polish Culture in Washington, Teatr Żydowski in Warsaw, and New York Public Library.
Krystyna Borkowska
Krystyna Borkowska was born in Warsaw, Poland. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland with Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Printmaking in 1983. In the years of 1983-1992 lived in London, England. Since 1994 she has lived and worked in New York City. She has been exhibiting her art regularly in Europe, US and Asia. She received The Pollock- Krasner Award, Fellowship in Painting from NYFA and Edward F. Albee Foundation Art Residency in Montauk.
In my paintings I refer to space, therefore, I often organize my paintings in groups of canvases and use repetition and a grid. For a single painting I utilize a box-like stretchers and metal leaf (silver, copper, aluminum, gold and others) in addition to the traditional painting materials. For the exhibition “The space between note and sound” I chose to show one of the singular paintings where the silver leaf was applied. As silver tarnishes in time, the surface composition changes. This transformationseems to resemble the way in which the sound changes in the dimension of time. It corresponds with the leap that happens between the note and the sound.
Vassi Vasevski

addressing often in my artwork. Do they hold the power
to make us better, to improve the way we live and communicate?
My answer is positive and I hope one would agree when
viewing my paintings.
Narcyz Piórecki
Born in Przemyśl, Poland, in 1959. He studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the supervision of Professor Jan Szancenbach; he earned a degree in 1986. From 1984-1988 he studied also in Profs. Lilia Kulka’s and Ryszard Kwiecień’s Studio of Art Textiles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He was a research fellow at the University in Rzeszów. Narcyz Piórecki is interested in painting, graphic, photography as well as in the textile arts. He had several solo exhibitions and his works were displayed in many group expositions. He organizes numerous cultural events like the International Plein Air Art Workshops ‘The wicker in Arboretum’ or The garden festival in Arboretum Bolestraszyce. He is a director of the Art Gallery ‘U Piotra’ and the Scholar of The Polish Ministry of Culture and Art.
Kristin Reed
My work concerns itself with human consciousness and how our beings are made of light with comparatively very little physical manifestation. I am becoming much more aware of the cosmos, our planet, and our connection to and reflection in both. I contrast the chaos of our lives, represented by expressionistic marks, color/light, random patterns, found-objects and collaged elements from our commercially-oriented culture, with the symmetry and order of sacred symbols found in Earth’s most ancient civilizations — representing the perfection of the abstract architecture of life. In “The Music of Chance-2” the geometry of sine and cosine represent the coincidental music forming in the natural universe.
Michal Czekanski
Michal Czekanski was born in Poland in 1978. He graduated from the Academy Fine of Arts in Cracow in 2004. His work is inspired by his interest in nature and relations between people.
