In the second decade of an extraordinary career, the Penderecki
String Quartet has become one of the most celebrated
chamber ensembles in the music world. The Quartet's performing
schedule takes them annually to the great concert stages of
North and South America, Europe and the Far East. The Penderecki
Quartet was founded in Poland in 1986 at the urging of the
preeminent Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, and to this
day the Quartet is a devoted champion of the music of our time. (WQXR
broadcast Sunday, November 27 at 6 PM)

The Penderecki String Quartet is known for their authoritative
interpretation of Penderecki's complete works for String Quartet
on CD (United Records, England). The Quartet is also a devoted
champion of the music of our time, performing a repertoire
that ranges from Bach to Brahms, from Bartok to Ligeti, from
Frank Zappa to John Oswald. The group has premiered over 100
new works from such composers as Brian Cherney, Linda C. Smith,
Randolph Peters, Harry Freedman, Glenn Buhr, Alice Ho, Peter
Hatch, Omar Daniel and Gilles Tremblay. Their large discography
includes over 20 recordings, including the chamber music repertoire
of Johannes Brahms and a new release of the six Bela Bartok
quartets. The Quartet has also recorded discs for CBC, CMC,
EMI, United, and Artifact labels among others. The PSQ
devotes much of its time to Quartetfest, an intensive Spring
seminar held at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.
As they enter their 14 th year as Quartet-in-Residence at Laurier
University, their string program has become one of the most
successful programs in Canada, attracting an international
body of students. |
