Art Lillard's Heavenly Big Band
Among the current wave of big bands, Art Lillard's Heavenly
Big Band is
one of the few playing brand new music that's just as tuneful and dancey as the
music we know from the 30's and 40's. The Heavenly Band has been delighting local
audiences with its uplifting and danceable sounds since 1987. Led by drummer-composer
Art Lillard, the band performs an extensive repertoire of original songs varying
in style from swing to samba to jazz ballad to bossa nova. The ensemble, ranging
from 13 to 16 players, features flutes along with the more traditional saxophones
and brass. Each arrangement showcases the inspirational soloing abilities of
some of New York's finest jazz instrumentalists. Art Lillard's Heavenly Big
Band has played in many New York City nightclubs, including The Savoy, Swing
46, Le Bar Bat, The Knitting Factory, The Garage, and Wetlands. It has also performed
at churches, festivals and outdoor concerts, and presented programs for such
worthy causes as former President Jimmy Carter's Habitat for Humanity.
Art Liliard
Art Lillard - drummer,
composer, arranger, bandleader; a musician with many gifts.
In each of his musical roles he makes a unique and refreshing
contribution to our musical culture. He has been leading the Heavenly
Band since 1987. The band's repertoire consists almost
entirely of original compositions and arrangements, with styles
including bebop, Latin jazz, blues, and numbers which defy category
altogether. Whatever the style, the music swings. A professional
drummer since 1970, Art has had a rich performing and recording
career with smaller jazz ensembles and as a sideman in jazz,
country & western, cabaret, rock, and show music. He also
has a theater background, including productions by the Amas
Repertory Theater. During the 1990’s he toured Europe
with the Broadway show Ain't Misbehavin',
and both Europe and South America with an original production
of Phantom of the Opera. Art has written
hundreds of compositions in a wide range of musical genres.
He wrote and scored the soundtrack for a film, The
Wannabees. Over the years Art has played professionally
with hundreds of well-known musicians. He is currently studying
advanced harmony, counterpoint and arranging with music educator
Paul Caputo. Art is also a respected teacher in his own right,
mentor of many years to countless students.
